How to enhance your hair color with tea!

We use toners to enhance dull tones or cancel out unwanted tones. For example, someone with blonde or silver strands can use a shampoo with purple pigments to neutralize brassy tones. But you can also use various teas for a light tonic treatment, and these can also improve the health of your hair.

You may already know that teas are full of antioxidants, which neutralize and stop free radical damage. Hence, they can lighten hair and protect hair from various issues such as brittleness, breakage, shedding and even premature graying. Some teas also contain caffeine, which can help with hair growth: In fact, a 2018 study shows that a caffeine-based topical liquid can be very effective.

And, yes, depending on the tea you choose, you can absolutely see a difference in shade. Here’s how we recommend choosing a mix:

If you want to bring out warmer tones, use green tea.

If you want to lighten blonde hair, use chamomile tea.

For a great natural hair tonic for redheads, use hibiscus tea.

Use sage tea to darken gray hair.

To deepen dark hair, use black tea.

Make 1 to 2 cups of water with 2 to 3 tea bags of your choice.

Allow the solution to cool to room temperature, then pour into a spray bottle.

Spray on clean hair from root to tip.

Leave it on for at least 30 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. Shampoo, condition and style as usual.

We love the tea hair treatment here. Teas are packed with antioxidants and many varieties can even help with hair growth. But these antioxidants do more than protect against wear and tear—they can also make your color look much more vibrant. So, in addition to looking for tea extracts in your favorite products, maybe try the DIY tea rinse for improved color and shine.
