Soma started as an idea during 2014 by Eleni Poulopoulou in her kitchen when she created her first soaps based on natural ingredients. After attending her first soap seminar, she loved the traditional soap process and started experimenting with raw ingredients like dark chocolate, clays, fruit juices, coffee and botanical oils. She saw the difference on her skin after using natural handmade soaps and fell in love with essential oils, aromatherapy and all pure ingredients that she could use and mix, creating simple and beneficial recipes. After herbalism and aromatherapy courses, natural skincare products were the next step! She realised the importance of creating products with the most fresh ingredients and how natural remedies can heal, soothe and add glow to the skin! Eleni started creating the first products inspired by nature, greek herbs and amazing scent combinations! Each product would be truly natural without exception.
Soma is the culmination of all things Eleni lives and loves. From creating unique formulas, beautifully designed packaging, to being environmentally conscious of where ingredients are scoured. Soma celebrates the vibrancy, color and purity in the life around us with peaceful mind and spirit.
Soma is a botanical, unisex skincare line made for real people and their body (soma / σώμα / in ancient greek). Made of therapeutic blends of premium herbs, botanical oils and essential oils, Soma products are designed to create effective formulas with scientifically proven beneficial ingredients that combine health and beauty. We keep our ingredients pure and simple, creating a company that we would prefer to buy from. Named after the Greek word Σώμα, we are located in Thessaloniki, Greece and our mission is to use simple and finest botanical ingredients and to keep our production small so as to be fresh. We want our skincare rituals being simple, enjoyable and effective.
All of our formulas are created and tested by us, on real people — never on animals and always from scratch. Creating clean products that have minimal impact on the environment is also a core mission at Soma. We are constantly striving to implement the most sustainable practices possible when creating our formulas. We are also trying to leave a minimal carbon footprint on the Earth. We strive to be as ecologically friendly as possible, which includes using recyclable packaging, usually from specially-selected glass or not even using boxes for most of our products. When possible, we source our ingredients locally. We maintain transparency about what goes into our products. The ingredients lists are clear, and we are always willing to answer questions from our customers. We do not rely on misleading marketing to promote our products. Because we use safe ingredients derived from nature, our products are biodegradable.
The Holistic Approach to Skincare
Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, used the term, holism. He defined holism as “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” which means we cannot understand the fullness of our parts unless they are in harmony together. This defines holistic therapy.
A holistic approach simply means looking at and treating something as a whole, and not just parts of it. The underlying philosophy is that these parts are interrelated and interdependent – balance, and thus health can only be achieved if all the parts are working properly.
It means looking for the causes as opposed to simply just treating symptoms. It acknowledges that our environment and inner imbalances (physical, emotional, mental) can have serious consequences for our health, thus we need to take everything into account if we would like to restore that balance.
In the case of skin care, a holistic approach means that putting on an expensive moisturizer on our face is not enough. It only treats one part of the skin – the outer layer, and only temporarily. But the overall health of our skin (remember, it is our largest organ) depends on so much more than that. It’s not enough to treat it from the outside only. We have to nurture it from the inside as well. The status and look of skin depend on many factors – from ingredients we use, through our lifestyle choices (diet, exercise) and the environmental stressors we meet, to our emotional and mental well-being.
